Mar, '16Moving to a brand new country can seem a little overwhelming. However, if you get to know your new home country properly, you will most likely feel at home in no time. The UK is a great country with many wonderful opportunities. If you want to feel more at home when you come to the UK, there are some things you can do to help yourself settle in more quickly. Here are some things that will make you feel more at home when you move to the UK.
Learn about traditions & holidays
If you want to feel at home in the UK, then it’s useful to know about key traditions and holidays. For example, the main holidays that are celebrated in the UK are Christmas, Easter, Pancake Day, Bonfire Night, Halloween and Valentine’s Day. You might also want to find out what people do for these holidays and take part in a few traditions. This will give you a feel for the country and help you to understand what is celebrated here.Join local clubs and support groups
There are support groups for foreign residents in the UK, where you can meet other people in your position and ask advice. You may also find it helpful to join one or two local clubs so that you can meet people and learn a new skill. For example sports clubs, arts and crafts and special interest clubs. Speak to your local authority about what clubs you can join in your local area.Be social and make friends
Although it may seem like a daunting prospect to try and make new friends in an unfamiliar country, it’s a great way to help yourself feel more at home. Try and attend social events and head out and about as much as possible so that you can meet new people. The friends you make can help you settle in and provide you with some insider knowledge and tips about living in the UK.Get involved in your local community
One way to meet people is to get involved in your local community. Attend community based events, and maybe even help out by doing some volunteering. There are plenty of volunteering schemes in the UK that you can try.Visit some of the UK’s most well-known attractions
Whilst in the UK, you might as well experience everything the country has to offer. Here you will find an endless selection of places to see, things to do and famous landmarks to visit. London is obviously a good place to start, as well as some of the UK’s best cities including Leeds and Manchester.Learn to speak English
Obviously learning to speak English well will really help you when you move to the UK. If you can communicate with people easily then you will settle in much more quickly. If you need to improve your English consider taking language lessons when you get to the UK.Sample some traditional English dishes
The UK has a few different specialities when it comes to food. Perhaps the most popular traditional British dishes are fish and chips and the classic British roast dinner. You will need to get used to the cuisine in the UK. Thankfully as well as British food, there are many other cuisines available to try in the UK.
